True Home Sangha is a mindfulness/meditation practice community in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village. We are a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) only sangha, seeking to provide a safe(r) space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color practitioners as we practice together, explore the dharma through our respective perspectives, and engage in healing from the traumas of systemic racism and other oppressions, for ourselves and each other.
Most of our members are in California in the Pacific time zone, but since we meet online, any BIPOC mindfulness practitioners who wish to join us are welcome. We meet via Zoom on Mondays, 4:30-6pm PT. Contact polyc.email@gmail.com if you are a BIPOC practitioner and interested in joining us.
About the Plum Village Tradition
Plum Village is an International Community of Engaged Buddhism with practitioners all over the world that was founded by Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh. We recognize that the mindfulness practices of Buddhism must be applied to daily life, not just while on the cushion, extending to addressing issues of social inequities.
Mindfulness must also be practiced as a community, or sangha. We meet weekly to support each other and help sustain our practice. The practice of mindfulness helps to heal us, which in turn allows us to help heal the world towards Beloved Community. Once a month we recite the Five Mindfulness Trainings or their Contemplations together, reconfirming our intentions to uphold the Five Precepts as given to us by the Buddha.
About Being a BIPOC-Only Sangha
Nearly all of us carry biases and perceptions about people of other ethnicities due to systemic racism. Repeated exposure to racism in various forms, including micro-aggressions, causes trauma that needs to be healed. In mixed spaces, even among our most sincere white-bodied allies, BIPOC folks often find themselves having to explain rather than just be. True Home exists as a BIPOC-only sangha in order to provide a healing space for BIPOC practitioners. We encourage our dear white-bodied siblings to find white-ally sanghas in which to practice.
